The latest Mercedes-Benz S-Class has spawned a plug-in hybrid option.
It’s called the S 580e, and Mercedes announced on Monday that the electrified luxury sedan will be coming to dealerships in the first half of 2023 as a 2023 model.
Order books are already open and prices are expected to start at $123,700 including a target fee of $1,150.
The powertrain of the S 580e consists of a 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six combined with a single electric motor, and its drive goes to all four wheels. Combined output is a healthy 510 hp, or enough for 0 to 60 mph acceleration in 5.1 seconds and a governed top speed of 155 mph. The same powertrain is used in a Maybach S 580e offered abroad.

As a plug-in hybrid, a purely electric range is possible, although the power in this mode is limited to 148 hp. The car is fitted with a 21.5kWh battery which Mercedes says will deliver a range of 62 miles on the WLTP cycle used overseas. The stricter EPA cycle would result in a lower range. According to Mercedes, the battery can be charged from 10% to 80% in about 20 minutes using a DC fast charger.
The S 580e isn’t the only plug-in hybrid version of the latest S-Class. In the 2023 model year, the S 63 E Performance from AMG will also be making its debut. This high-performance sedan features a twin-turbo V8 and an electric motor at the front and a second electric motor at the rear, with all engines producing 791 hp combined. Pricing for this model will be announced later this year just before launch.
