Developed by British chemical giant Ineos, the rugged Grenadier SUV is about to develop a pickup truck body.

A prototype for the Grenadier pickup has been spotted, and its lack of camouflage gear suggests its debut can’t be far off. A launch later this year or early next year is a strong possibility.

Ineos teased a Grenadier pickup with a stretched wheelbase (127 inches versus the SUV’s 115 inches) when the 2020 SUV made its debut. The prototype looks similar to the teased version. It has a crew cabin and what appears to be a fairly large bed. It is also believed that Grenadier pickups will come with a single cab.

Aside from the cargo bed and stretched wheelbase, the pickup should have the same or similar specs as the SUV. The Grenadier features a custom platform with body-on-frame construction, solid axles with front and rear Panhard bars, and progressive coil springs. To reduce weight, the body is made from a mix of aluminum, high-strength steels and some composite materials.

Ineos specifies a ground clearance of 10.4 inches, a wading depth of 31.5 inches and approach, tilt and departure angles of 35.5, 28.2 and 36.1 degrees for the SUV.

Current powertrain options for the SUV include BMW’s choice of petrol and diesel inline 6 engines. The engines are turbocharged 3.0 liter units and in both cases they are mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel drive system with a 2-speed transfer case and up to three locking differentials.

Production of the SUV began last year at a plant in France, and deliveries to some European markets have begun. Ineos plans to eventually bring the Grenadier to the US Greg Clark, Ineos’ head of America, said in an interview in 2022 that the Grenadier could be sold in the US by the end of 2023 and that the company is only focusing on the gas engine focus for this market.

Ineos is also known to be working on a smaller electric vehicle. However, the timing for the model is uncertain.
