If you are considering a trip to South Korea, you are not alone. Post-pandemic, the country has seen a remarkable surge in international tourism, not just from its neighboring countries but from around the world. An increase in international flights was announced in May 2022 to keep up with demand. The country’s burgeoning pop culture, known as Korean Wave, is just one of the reasons for the influx of travelers, with K-pop groups like BTS and Blackpink and Netflix show Squid Games becoming global phenomena.
To make the country even more accessible to international tourists, Airbnb has recently made it possible to search for hanok stays in South Korea. Similar to ryokans in Japan, hanoks are well-preserved historic homes, some dating back to the 14th century. The tranquil timber-frame homes with curved roofs are often built in scenic regions and with a view of a specific position – ideally with a mountain to the rear of the home and a river to the front. A stay in one of these houses offers a unique experience, especially at night when one usually sleeps on a mattress, called a yo, that is placed on the floor. For more inspiration, here are just a few of the hanoks we love on Airbnb.
