A man with a machete is killed in a shootout at a Riverside County state congressman
A man who authorities said swung a machete during a domestic dispute was shot dead by Riverside County Sheriff’s Deputies on Tuesday.
Deputies were called to the 800 block of Minor Street in San Jacinto at 12:56 p.m. after a woman said her boyfriend “behaved unexpectedly and was armed with a machete,” according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.
Although the woman escaped, her boyfriend stopped her 12-year-old child from going with her, MPs said. The man barricaded himself inside the house with the child.
“When deputies tried to save the youth, the suspect hit the deputy in the head with a wooden object, causing a minor injury, and then swung the machete at another deputy,” authorities said.
After deputies from the department’s Special Enforcement Bureau responded to help rescue the child, the man hit one deputy with a machete and at least one deputy opened fire, authorities said.
The child was unharmed and was safely removed from the home.
The man was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Two MPs were injured, authorities said. One was treated at the scene and the other was taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries that are not considered life-threatening.
“The MPs involved will be placed on paid administrative leave in accordance with department guidelines,” authorities said.
The sheriff’s department did not release the names of the deputies Tuesday.
