Glamping is made more inclusive and effortless than ever at AutoCamp Joshua Tree, 38 miles outside of Palm Springs and a three-hour drive from Los Angeles. The design and layout of this multitasking camp — which can accommodate family groups and corporate retreats as well as couples — puts guests at the center of the natural wonders and phenomena of the Coachella Desert, while offering the comforts found in better hotels and convenience Amenities include well-equipped kitchenettes with basic cookware, towels and linens, and a fire pit with grill.

Most of the accommodations at the two-person AutoCamp Joshua Tree ($229/night) are in neatly arranged, shiny Airstream trailers. The same goes for a handful of Vista X Suites ($379/night), which have been slightly enlarged to accommodate three adults or a family of four. Various phases of 20th and 21st century style are represented, from early mid-century caravan exteriors to 1970s-inspired decorative touches, to contemporary dark hardwood floorboards in the living areas and hexagonal tiling in the bathroom. The shower in each unit is surprisingly spacious, stocked with unisex Ursa Major skincare products and brushed black metal hardware. The bedroom is small but cosy, with earthy and soft bedding. Streamlined 1960s Scandinavian-style closets (with towels stowed inside and two fluffy bathrobes) accommodate clothes and small sporting gear.

The kitchenette, adjacent to the living area, includes a full sink, small refrigerator, microwave, and cabinets with plates, glasses, cookware, and a grill. All of these elements invite guests to take full advantage of the BBQ and mini terrace just outside the door. French press coffee and craft teas from local producers are available for an additional fee. There’s also free WiFi, although the camp’s vibe and friendly staff will remind visitors that to take full advantage of Joshua Tree’s gorgeous setting, it’s probably best to unplug.

On-property activities include a sitting area with fire pit (custom made for s’mores, with kits for sale), pool, free bikes, and cornhole court. There are also free yoga classes held on some mornings, as well as live music nights from time to time. Concierge service offers special activities and tailored tours for guests to discover the greater area protected by the Mojave Desert Land Trust, an accredited non-profit organization dedicated to preserving 100,000 hectares of prime desert habitat intersected by national parks , national monuments and wilderness meanders areas and connecting corridors for wildlife. Specialty activities include a sunset wine tasting with the Joshua Tree Bottle Shop, as well as a herbal medicine and desert ecology making hike, half-day adventure hikes, and rock climbing excursions coordinated by AutoCamp and Mojave Guides in Joshua Tree National Park.

The main building combines a check-in area, concierge desk, lounge seating and a large retail space. Covered picnic and patio tables, a larger adaptable dining area (for groups and special events), a bar and the pool are just outside the back door. In addition to camping and outdoor items, the shop stocks an imaginatively curated collection of merchandise that runs the gamut from AutoCamp Joshua Tree souvenir t-shirts and hoodies for the whole family to educational toys, books, sunglasses and a bottle shop with regional wineries. Breweries and soft drink manufacturers. Fresh coffee, tea, and cereal are provided free of charge for all guests each morning, though there’s a hearty menu of baked goods and full-size meals, as well as lunch and dinner provided by a local caterer later in the day.

If you’re planning a more ambitious California road trip, the expanded AutoCamp family includes similarly outfitted outposts in Sequoia, Yosemite, and the Russian River Valley. There are also two East Coast locations in Catskills, New York and Cape Cod, with more opening soon in Texas Hill Country, Utah’s Zion Territory, and Asheville, North Carolina near the Blue Ridge Mountains, opening in 2023 AutoCamp is designed to reflect the natural geology and geography of each site.
