NEW YORK (AP) — Deutsche Bank and JPMorgan Chase are asking a federal court to dismiss lawsuits alleging the big banks should have seen sex trafficking evidence from Jeffrey Epstein, the high-flying financier who killed himself in prison, while he was being prosecuted.

The banks said late Friday they had committed no negligent acts that harmed the women who filed the lawsuits and that the lawsuits had not shown they benefited from Epstein’s sex trade.

The filings in federal district court in New York came about a month after two women, both identified as Jane Doe, sued the banks and government of the US Virgin Islands, where Epstein had a home he owned on a small island .

The lawsuits, which are seeking class-action status to represent other Epstein victims, allege that the banks knowingly profited from Epstein’s sex trade and “preferred profit over law” to rake in millions of dollars from the financier.

They suggested that the banks should have stayed away from Epstein following his arrest in Florida in 2006 – he eventually pleaded guilty to charges of incitement to prostitution – and the aftermath of a federal investigation and reporting.

“Without the involvement of the financial institution, Epstein’s system of sex trafficking could not have existed or thrived,” the lawsuits state.

JPMorgan Chase said Friday that Jane Doe “is entitled to justice in her case … But this lawsuit against JPMC is directed at the wrong party, has no legal basis, and should be dismissed.”

Deutsche Bank said it provided “routine banking services” to Epstein from 2013 to 2018, and the lawsuit “does not come close to making a reasonable claim that Deutsche Bank … was part of Epstein’s criminal sex trafficking ring.”
