Bob Saget Death: Philadelphia remembers Temple University graduate, ‘Full House’ star after his death

Philadelphia (WPVI) – The news was passed on tape outside Temple University’s Low Klein College of Media and Communications on Monday to report the unexpected death of 65-year-old Bob Saget.

The famous television personality was born in Philadelphia on May 17, 1956, to Benjamin, a supermarket manager, and Rosalynn, who worked in hospital management.

He grew up in Norfolk, Virginia, then moved to Encino, California, before returning to the Philadelphia area.

He graduated from Abington High School in 1975. He was inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame in 1991.

The Abington School District issued this statement:

“We were saddened to learn of the loss of a member of the Abington Senior High School alumni community, Bob Saget, a Hall of Fame recruit. Our condolences are with his family and friends.”

Upon his induction into the school’s Hall of Fame, Saget credited his teachers including Mrs. Eileen Zimmerman for his success:

“when I arrived [Abington]I had to spend two years in English in one year,. . . Mrs. Zimmerman took me as a solo effort in her honors class and would meet with me several times a week to discuss the books she had asked me to read. I read anything of Steinbeck and Kipling and Hemingway, and we had lengthy discussions about them. Moby Dick and the Scarlet Letter I made rain checks.

She went there, but she was so giving as a teacher and as a human being, I can say she is one of the greatest influences in my life so far. I used to show her 8mm films I made, and I carried them on my “creative” writing and ended up proposing that I not go to college as a pre-med student, but study to become a comic filmmaker. This is serious advice for a teacher to give to a student. She even wrote in my yearbook, “To the next Groucho-Fellini.” I have not yet achieved those goals that you helped me achieve myself, but I am working towards them.”

The university issued this statement regarding the artist’s death:

Temple University is saddened to learn of the passing of Bob Saget, a very loyal alumnus and member of the university community. A legendary comic and star of hit shows like ‘Full House’ and ‘Funny Home Videos in America’, Saget will always be remembered as one of the most The funniest Temple in Temple ever. His work has touched the lives of so many and brought smiles to families around the world. While Saget will be sorely missed, his legacy and overall impact on the entertainment industry will continue to be felt for years to come.”

Action News spoke with Temple student Gil Rosen about the loss of the famous alumnus.

“Being a Klein student myself, Bob Saget came here many years ago,” Rosen said. “It’s a huge loss to the Temple community for sure.”

Saget is best known for playing lovable father Danny Tanner on the ABC sitcom “Full House” and the Netflix sequel “Fuller House”.

He also hosted “America’s Funniest Home Videos” from 1989 to 1997.

Saget was also a stand-up comedian with a saucy group, very different from his father’s television image. But before moving to Los Angeles and making it big, he started in our own.

Just last week, he shared memories with the Jacksonville news anchor, who is also a Temple alum.

“We got stuck in the equipment room,” Saget recalls.

“In Broad and Montgomery near the trucks they made great steaks,” said the announcer.

“They made great steak sandwiches,” Saget said. “Now, I don’t go to the trucks as much.”

Tributes flow to Saget, who was found dead Sunday in a hotel room at the Ritz-Carlton in Orlando.

According to the initial autopsy report, Saget was found dead lying face down on his bed in a luxurious hotel room and showed no signs of shock.

There were no signs of tampering, and the room itself was in good condition, “with items belonging to Mr.

The official cause of death and method of death are still pending and it may take 10 to 12 weeks for a full investigation and autopsy report to be completed.

Sagit, who just started his “I don’t do his negative tour,” has been traveling cross-country. He was scheduled to stop at the Keswick Theater in Glenside, Pennsylvania.

“As a real, kind and always funny member of our community, we will miss Bob Saget,” the theater wrote on Twitter.

Saturday night, Saget performed at the Ponte Phaedra Concert Hall in Jacksonville, Florida. Sunday morning, 3:42 a.m., Tweeted: “Loved tonight’s showPV_ConcertHall in Jacksonville. Grateful audience. Thanks again to RealTimWilkins for the opening. I had no idea I set two hours tonight. I’m hooked again on this ***. Check out BobSaget.com for my dates in 2022. .”

Those who knew him said his death was a terrible loss not only to the Temple community but to audiences across the country.

“He’s a really happy, positive, optimistic person,” said George Cummings, a former fellow at Saget and current assistant general manager of Temple TV. “He had a good sense of humor and even in school, he was watching comedy work. That was really what he wanted to do. The fact that he was starting a standing tour is a testament to how much he liked him and how much it meant to him.”

Stand-up comedian Chip Chantry recalled a funny moment before opening a show for Saget. He says the “Full House” star called him and told him he ran out of his underwear and was going to buy some. It was a joke popping up for years.

“And no matter how well I do in my career after that, if anything good ever happens, he congratulates me and reminds me that I was just the guy who bought his underwear,” Chantry laughed.

Saget had daughters Aubrey, Lara and Jennifer from his first wife Sherry Kramer before divorcing in 1997. He married Kelly Rizzo in 2018.
