Browns Olivia Pichardo made NCAA history Friday, becoming, the school said, the first woman to appear in a Division 1 baseball game.
The New York City freshman came on as a pinch hitter with an out in the ninth inning and landed on first base, resulting in a 10-1 loss to Bryant in Providence, Rhode Island.

Pichardo, a freshman utility player and walk-on, became the first woman to field an active NCAA DI baseball varsity roster last fall.
Brown baseball coach Grant Achilles said he was impressed with Pichardo’s athleticism during their first tryout and subsequent practices, calling it the “most complete walk-in tryout I’ve seen from a player” since he became Brown’s coach in 2012.
Pichardo was a pitcher and outfielder for the US women’s national team last summer and previously played college baseball in Queens.
Brown fell to 1-10 with Friday’s home opener loss.
