Democratic lawmakers step up calls for Clarence Thomas to resign

Rep. Bill Pascrell (DN.J.) slapped Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and doubled down on his call for Thomas to resign on Friday.

Pascrell, who previously expressed his lack of confidence in Thomas as a “neutral actor” in court, began his tweet with a “timely reminder” to Thomas and his wife, Ginni, as the judiciary considers Moore v. Harper.

The case concerns the “independent state legislature” theory that Thomas appears to support, which has been called “antithetical” to the Constitution. North Carolina Republicans argue that the Constitution gives state legislatures exclusive authority to determine “the time, place, and manner” of elections.

The New York Times reported that “proponents of the strongest form of the theory say it means no other organs of state government … can change a lawmaker’s actions in federal elections.”

In his sharp criticism on Twitter, Pascrell pointed to Thomas’ involvement in election cases.

“A timely reminder that Clarence Thomas listened to voting cases while his wife conspired to overthrow democracy,” Pascrell wrote. “Clarence Thomas is corrupt as hell and should resign from the Supreme Court.”

Pascrell previously called for Thomas’ resignation in June following reports of his wife Ginni’s correspondence with former President Donald Trump’s attorney John Eastman, Thomas’ former attorney and a key figure in attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election , had taken place.

“In recent years we have turned a deaf ear to the bad deeds of powerful actors, but Clarence and Ginni Thomas took part in one of the worst breaches of trust our court system has ever seen,” Pascrell said in a statement. “Clarence Thomas cannot possibly be seen as a neutral actor, but as a corrupt jurist who has poisoned the Supreme Court. Clarence Thomas should have dignity and ultimate respect for our democracy and resign.”

Ginni Thomas has previously worked hard because of her political commitment and separated from her husband’s job at the beginning of the year.

“Like so many married couples, we share many of the same ideals, principles and aspirations for America,” Ginni Thomas told the Washington Free Beacon. “But we have our own careers and also our own ideas and opinions. Clarence doesn’t discuss his work with me and I don’t include him in my work.”
