Denzel Washington ‘wondered if something was wrong’ with Chadwick Boseman while directing him

Denzel Washington is opening up about working with the late Chadwick Boseman, who directed him on Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, in a new variety cover story released Thursday.

The 67-year-old revealed that, at the time, no one on set was aware that the late actor had cancer, but Washington “questioned if something was wrong.”

Chadwick sadly passed away of colon cancer on August 28, 2020, at the age of 43, after a quiet four-year battle with the disease.

‘Man among the people.’ He suffered quietly, Denzel told a variety of the late star.

Washington directed Bosman in Viola Davis led by Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom for Netflix.

The Black Panther star won a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild Award for his role and was nominated for an Academy Award.

He made the movie, and no one knew him. I do not know. Denzel remembers saying no peeps about it. He just did his job. I wondered if something was wrong because he seemed weak or tired at times.

We had no idea, and it wasn’t anyone’s business. Good for him, he kept to himself.

Washington would choose directing rather than acting in his later years, and he said in his interview that he was often forced into front of the camera in order to get the money to make the film.

“Actually, I’ve never really enjoyed directing and directing,” he revealed. “I’ve acted in films because I needed to in order to get the money to direct them.”

He added about his latest film, Jordan Magazine: “Now, to me, it feels like the first movie I’ve made, because I’m not really into it. That’s the way I prefer it.”

The film, starring Michael B. Jordan, was inspired by the true story of the first sergeant. Charles Monroe King, who was killed in Iraq in 2006, leaving his partner, Dana Kennedy, to raise their young son Jordan alone.

Kennedy, a former New York Times journalist and Pulitzer Prize winner, originally wrote for a magazine that her late fiancé prepared for their son during his time in Iraq for her newspaper, before expanding it to the 2008 book, which served as the basis for the new film.

While speaking with Religion News, Washington admitted that he will gather the cast and crew in prayer before beginning filming for the day.

“God’s spirit throughout the movie. He said of the character Jordan played: Charles is an angel. ‘I’m a believer. Dana is a believer. So that was part of every decision I hope to try to make.'”

“I wanted to please God, I wanted to please Charles, and I wanted to please Dana,” he added.

The film was released on Christmas Day in a limited number of theaters and will be followed by a streaming release on Apple TV + on January 14.
