Four dead in wrong-way fall on Freeway 71 in Chino Hills

Four people were killed in a multiple-vehicle collision the wrong way on Freeway 71 in Chino Hills early Sunday morning, authorities said.

The accident happened around 2:30 a.m. in the southbound lanes of the freeway near Central Avenue after several motorists called 911 to report a car going the wrong way in those lanes, the authorities said California Highway Patrol.

Authorities say at least four vehicles were involved in the collision.

Officers arrived and found at least one car fully ablaze, authorities said. Despite fighting the fire with fire extinguishers, they were unable to save the people trapped inside.

Four victims were pronounced dead at the scene and at least one other person was taken to a hospital, authorities said.
