Gas Power Saves Texas from Blackouts as Wind Power Collapses – zoohousenews.com

(Natural News) The Department of Energy recently declared a power emergency in Texas after a winter arctic blast collapsed wind power and caused a power shortage.

The emergency order allowed the state’s grid operator to exceed certain air pollution limits to boost power generation amid record electricity demand in the state. The Texas Electric Reliability Council (ERCOT), which serves 90 percent of Texas’ electric customers, filed for an emergency order Dec. 23 as early-day demand on the grid exceeded 74,000 megawatts.

“While the vast majority of generating units in the ERCOT region continue to operate smoothly, a small number of units have experienced operational difficulties due to cold weather or gas restrictions,” the Department of Energy said in its order.

“Happily, a repeat of last year’s blackouts was avoided thanks to gas power that came to the rescue when wind power collapsed to virtually zero while demand surged,” Paul Homewood wrote in a climate blog.

He noted that Texas has 35 gigawatts (GW) of wind capacity, but output dipped below five GW throughout December 24 and to two GW for most of the day.

“It was certainly not due to a lack of wind, quite the opposite. I don’t know whether the wind power collapsed because the wind was too strong or because of icing. But either way, it was a weather-related issue,” he added. “Fortunately, ERCOT was able to draw on ample gas power capacity to both replace the loss of wind power and meet rising demand, which peaked at 74 GW, about 15 GW more than normal.”

Homewood: Millions of Americans will freeze to death if Biden prevails

President Joe Biden signed Executive Order 14057 in 2021 to catalyze America’s clean energy and jobs industry through the Federal Sustainability Plan.

This ambitious action plan aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50 to 52 percent by 2030 compared to 2005 levels and limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. The sustainability plan calls for 100 percent emission-free electricity (CFE) on an annual net basis by 2030.

“How many millions of Americans will freeze to death if he has his way?” Homewood pointed out.

Additionally, on December 16, the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) Energy issued solicitations to purchase CFE to support Department of Defense (DoD) and federal agency installations in two key regions.

“This is an important step forward in transforming the way the U.S. government buys and manages electricity and putting the nation on track to achieve a zero-carbon electricity sector by 2035,” it said in the press release of the Ministry of Defense.

Assistant Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks said the clean energy transition can make US military assets more resilient, operational forces more agile and the country more competitive in the face of rapidly changing global energy markets.

“The Department of Defense is one of the largest electricity consumers in the world, and when it comes to clean energy, we send a clear signal to the market: DoD is buying,” she added.

However, Craig Idso, founder and CEO of the Center for the Study of Carbon Dioxide and Global Change, has refuted claims that high levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) pose a direct threat to health and the environment. According to Idso, CO2 levels would have to rise 36 times above current levels before they would even pose a mild health risk. “That level (ie 15,000ppm) will never occur because it is a factor of ten above the atmospheric CO2 limit of approximately 1,500ppm that scientists believe would be possible if society were to utilize all of the currently known fossil fuel reserves on the planet. ” he explained.
