George Floyd’s grandniece shot, injured in New Year’s Day shooting

“She is recovering,” Dylan told CNN reporter Rosa Flores on Wednesday. Dylan told Flores that the details KTRK provided were accurate, but he did not have time to give an interview at the time.

The family told KTRK that the 4-year-old victim was shot in the torso while she was sleeping in her bed and suffered perforations in the lung, liver and three ribs. Dylan KTRK showed bullet holes on walls and windows.

“My daughter jumped up and said, ‘Dad, I got hurt,’ and I was shocked until I saw the blood and realized that my 4-year-old was really injured,” Dylan told KTRK. “She didn’t know what was going on. She was sleeping.”

The Houston Police Department said in a press release Tuesday that Ariana was taken to the hospital in a private vehicle where she underwent surgery. She is currently in a stable condition in the intensive care unit.

“I’m really in pain right now,” George Floyd’s brother, Philones Floyd, told CNN.

Houston Police Chief Troy Viner called the shooting “meaningless” and launched an internal investigation into HPD’s response to the shooting, according to a statement posted to HPD’s Twitter account.

Police arrived about four hours after the incident, which occurred around 3 a.m., Dylan told KTRK.

“I am aware and have concerns about the late response time in this incident and have launched an internal affairs investigation. I am asking the city to continue to pray for the child’s full recovery and to help provide information that will lead to the arrest of the suspect or suspects responsible.” Wiener said in the statement.

In a statement published on Wednesday, Police Department Twitter account, Viner said Houston police responded first after discovering a shooting using “Shot Spotter Technology” around 3 a.m.

Wiener said officers searched for a spot in the area where gunshots were spotted by the technology, and happened to notice a “large hole in the fence leading into the apartment complex.” They walked into parts of the complex, Wiener said, were not reported by citizens and eventually left.

“Unbeknownst to them, the child was already taken from an apartment in a private car to the hospital within 3-4 minutes after the shooting,” the president added in his statement.

An internal investigation was also announced Wednesday by the Houston Emergency Center to determine whether appropriate call handling protocols and procedures were followed, the Houston Office of Emergency Management (OEM) He said in a tweet. An initial investigation indicated that “the Houston Police Department was not notified of this incident at the same time as medical personnel.” Investigation is underway.

“Collectively, we will determine whether there is a need to make changes in protocols and training in how calls are handled and encrypted for transmission,” Chief Wiener said in his statement.

According to the PSD, there were four adults and two children inside the apartment at the time of the shooting. There is no suspicious description and the motive behind the shooting is unknown at the moment. The incident is under investigation by the Personnel Department.

CNN has reached out to Floyd’s family attorney, Ben Crump, for comment.

Floyd died in May 2020 in Minneapolis after then-police officer Derek Chauvin kneeled on his neck for more than nine minutes. Chauvin was convicted of the murder last spring and sentenced to 22-and-a-half years in prison in June.
His death sparked protests in the United States and around the world that called for changes in the relationship of police and law enforcement with black and brown communities.
