Halo Infinite has been rated as challenging, engaging and at times downright devastating. It is, in every way, a hyper-focused version of Halo Infinite’s multiplayer, highlighting the best parts of the game and the areas that are most in need of improvement.
In the Halo Infinite rating, you will play with a battle rifle only, instead of the standard assault rifle and combo pistol in the Arena. You and three other players must act as a well-trained Spartan army to defeat enemy players in bouts of Capture the Flag, Oddball, Stronghold, and Slayer, and each match will feel more tense than the next. There are no vehicles here, just the occasional force weapon, and any attempt to snatch it will likely cost you.
The Halo Infinite rating might not be for everyone, and may need some serious updates like the opportunity to choose playlists or a better way to see your stats, but it’s still the purest Halo experience. The first night I play it, the hours slip by as I sweat through tense slayer matches and notice the excitement of a familiar feeling. Just like my struggle to reach level 50 in Halo 3, I feel the beginnings of a rated mania crawling down the back of my neck. It has had my grip for over a week now – I log in every night and grind out some ranked matches to try to take it to the next level. Halo Infinite’s competitive gameplay has high and low points, which I wouldn’t get any other way.
Halo Infinite is classified as the concentrated essence of Halo. There are no bulky maps, no vehicles, and the only game modes you’ll play are those that require teamwork or an impressive K/D ratio. Each powerful weapon initiates an intense firefight, and the movement of the map becomes just as important as your accuracy.
You’ll know a map inside and out after a few rounds of ranked play, because you’ll learn to plan it the hard way – not knowing your line of sight or waypoint an enemy can use to beat you will almost always lead to a quick death. Ranked gameplay also forces you to master basic aura mechanics: headshots, fights, and throwing grenades. Almost every arranged match begins with a wave of grenades exploding around you, as players alternate between hitting them at you and taking shots with the battle rifle. Ah, the battle rifle.
I am a practicing member of the BR Church, so I was happy to play my first Halo Infinite ranked match and see that my only starting weapon is the mid-range rifle. The three-round blast weapon requires accuracy and can be a bit tricky to get, but once you do, you can’t stop it. br are halo.
You know you’re playing a tough team in a ranked match when you can barely shoot a BR team before your Spartan wins out of range. If you can’t use BR, you can’t play ranked. But once you learn the ins and outs of a gun, switching from arranging to playing Big Team Battle or Quick Play will have you searching maps for the gun. Like most Halo, the skill ceiling is high, but climbing close to it feels dangerously powerful.
The way the ranks work in matching the rankings is downright confusing. To start, you’ll play a series of ten placement matches to decide where you’ll fall on Halo Infinite Rating Scale, which starts at Bronze and extends all the way to Onyx. You’ll play the same game modes once you’re officially set, most likely with players of the same rank – although this seems like an issue at the time of writing.
Recently, Halo Pro player Ricky Spanch has taken to Twitter To say, “It would be great if infinite rank matches were actually meant to match all players of the same rank to each other instead of doing stupid team balancing. You can’t even play with other players without having people in the game excel from their territory” . Hello Community Manager replied, promising that the 343 Industries team is “looking into reports of matches like this.”
Matches are not as confusing as how the rank scale actually works. Right now, I’m currently at Platinum 6, one level away from entering Diamond Level 1 – each named rank has six number positions. But the extent to which I adjust my rank after each match seems to vary greatly, with some matches giving me a gradual increase after a win and others almost knocking me out of platinum 5 after a loss. We only know that your rank improves “when you perform better than expected”, so it can be assumed that the big criticisms are the result of you losing a match that 343 thought you should have won.
But if the current matchmaking process focuses on team balancing rather than matching players of the same ranks, as Ricky Spanch suggested above, the way you cycle through those ranks makes less sense. It also opens the door to frequently mismatched teams, which is an absolute blessing when playing goal-based matches – which you can’t opt out of.
And herein lies the biggest problem with Halo Infinite rating, which is indicative of the biggest problem Halo Infinite beta has: you can’t choose your game modes. Right now, Halo Infinite lets you go into three playlists: Quick Play, Big Team Battle, and Rank Arena. There is no way to narrow down the game modes within these playlists, which is quite devastating when playing ranked.
Thematic and four-pronged gameplay modes are known to be challenging, and rating Halo Infinite doesn’t break that trend. Without proper communication or strategy, a Capture the Flag match can become a quick blast if the other team has a loosely grouped game plan. Right now, I can say that the vast majority of ranked matches I lose are based on goals; Some are almost no competition, like Oddball losing from two to nothing or barely breaking two numbers in Stronghold matches. It’s incredibly frustrating, and even more so when it’s my random tank level afterwards.
Hopefully, when the Halo Infinite beta ends with the game’s official launch on December 8, the inability to choose game modes will be over with it. Some players prefer to display their abilities in Strategic Objective modes while others just want to show their K/D ratio in Slayer. Being able to choose is what makes multiplayer games so appealing, especially when they’re free to play like Halo Infinite. There is so much variety in Halo across traditional Slayer matches and objective gameplay that many players end up specializing in one over the other. This is why selection is so essential in ranked matches, that Slayer fans like myself have to compete in Oddball matches.
Halo Infinite rated multiplayer game is an abstract version of the excellent gameplay of 343, which can be incredibly attractive and exciting. It entices you with the allure of its combat rifles and smaller matches, but like a siren it pulls you deeper with its lack of selection and muddled rating process. There is gold to be mined in the Halo Infinite Rank, and it will be much easier to find when it addresses 343 of the few game-wide issues. Until then, I’ll turn it on until the wee hours of the morning, whispering curses under my breath so as not to disturb the neighbors. Who am I kidding, I’ll probably keep doing that after the updates come out…
