Since mid-July, people affected by a mental health crisis across the country have been able to dial three numbers on their phones – 9-8-8 – and reach counselors who are trained to help. Anyone with a working phone or internet service can call, text, or chat online for help with crises ranging from suicidal thoughts to drug addiction.

Policy makers launched 988 with big aspirations. The goal is to eventually provide people seeking help with someone to call, and a personal response if needed, and a point of contact to turn to – all without unduly involving the police.

The Times investigates the introduction of the 988 system in Los Angeles County. We analyze early data to determine what is and isn’t working for those who need help. Of course, numbers and statistics cannot convey how people experience the service, arguably the most important measure of its success. That’s where you come in.

We want to hear about your experience of calling the crisis hotline, including 988 and the former Lifeline number (1-800-273-8255). We know this is sensitive information. Your name and other identifying information will never be used without your consent. Responses are used in an analysis that anonymizes those who provide feedback.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. Your vote matters.
