In 2022, exotic car sales were booming

Exotic brand car sales hit new heights in 2022 despite a long list of major headwinds.

Events such as the war in Ukraine, energy and inflation crises or supply disruptions could not stop many brands in the ultra-luxury segment from achieving record results.

Of the brands that reported full-year 2022 sales, Lamborghini was the big winner as the automaker managed to deliver 9,233 units, a 10% year-over-year increase.

The number is impressive considering that production of the Aventador ended in September 2022 and the Huracán is also at the end of its life cycle, when sales of sporty models normally fall. The majority of Lamborghini sales – 5,367 units – came from the Urus SUV alone.

Rolls-Royce also showed an excellent performance. In 2022, it recorded sales of 6,021 units, up 8% from the previous year. Rolls-Royce said it has also seen record demand for its Rolls-Royce Bespoke personalization division.

Rolls-Royce hasn’t provided a sales breakdown, but has confirmed the Cullinan SUV as a top seller.

Bentley sales also rose to a new record in 2022, in this case 15,174 units, up 4% from the previous year. It was the first time Bentley sales exceeded 15,000 units. The most popular model was again the Bentayga SUV with a share of around 42%.

Even Bugatti, whose cars cost seven and sometimes eight figures, celebrated a record in 2022. He managed to ship 80 units, which is the highest for a 12-month period. And things are expected to grow in 2023 as Bugatti plans to add more showrooms, the automaker said.

Aston Martin, Ferrari and McLaren have not yet announced sales figures for 2022. McLaren is privately owned and therefore has no figures to report, although its sales are likely to have declined due to delays in the launch of the new Artura supercar.

Ferrari is likely to have surpassed its record of 11,155 units in 2021, while Aston Martin is also likely to see an increase, albeit perhaps not a record.
