SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — The wife of a northwest Iowa district leader has been charged with 52 counts of voter fraud after she allegedly filled out and cast absentee ballots in her husband’s unsuccessful race for a 2020 Republican congressional nomination. said the federal prosecutor.

Kim Phuong Taylor, 49, was arrested Thursday and pleaded not guilty before being released on a personal plea, the Sioux City Journal reported. Her trial is scheduled to begin on March 20.

Prosecutors allege in an indictment released Thursday that Phuong Taylor filled out voter registration forms or submitted absentee ballots for people in Sioux City’s Vietnamese community who had limited English reading and understanding.

She filled out “dozens of voter registrations, mail-in ballot application forms and mail-in ballot materials with false information” and delivered mail-in ballot materials, sometimes without the knowledge of the people whose names were used, according to the indictment.

Woodbury County CPA Pat Gill said Thursday he notified the Iowa Secretary of State’s office after someone contacted his office about a fraudulent ballot being cast on their behalf in November 2020 .

Kim Phuong Taylor, 49, wife of the regulator’s vice chairman Jeremy Taylor, was charged with 26 counts of providing false information in registration and voting, three counts of fraudulent registration and 23 counts of fraudulent voting. https://t.co/T2Gaolqo3z

He said his office later provided the FBI with suspected fraudulent registration forms and ballot-by-mail records.

Phuong Taylor committed the fraud before the June 2020 primary, in which her husband Jeremy Taylor, a former member of the Iowa House, finished a distant third place in the race for the Republican nomination for the congressional seat in Iowa’s 4th Circuit, prosecutors allege . The winner of that race, Randy Feenstra, easily won the congressional election in November.

Prosecutors allege that Phuong Taylor committed the same fraud ahead of the November 2020 election that elected Jeremy Taylor to the Woodbury County Board, according to the indictment.

Jeremy Taylor is not named in the indictment and has not been charged with any wrongdoing.

Kim Phuong Taylor’s attorney, John Greer of Spencer, Iowa, declined to comment on the charges, the Journal reported.
