(Natural News) New Twitter owner Elon Musk has revealed that some key data on how the social media platform has stifled freedom of expression has been hidden from previous Twitter bosses and may even have been deleted.
As part of Musk’s efforts to bring transparency to Twitter’s past role in suppressing free speech online, Musk has released the platform’s internal communication on the matter, which he calls the “Twitter Files.” Unfortunately, some important documents may have been hidden or even permanently deleted.
Musk made the disclosure in response to a question from Twitter founder and former CEO Jack Dorsey about the speed at which the files were being released.
“If the goal is transparency to build trust, why not just publish everything without filters and let people judge for themselves? Including any discussion of current and future promotions? Make everything public now,” Dorsey said in a post on his Twitter account.
Dorsey responded to a series of posts from Musk telling his followers to expect “Episode 2 of The Twitter Files” very soon. He then responded to Dorsey by stating that important data may have been hidden and possibly sanitized.
“Most important data has been hidden (including from you) and some may have been deleted, but anything we find will be made public,” Musk wrote.
Twitter censorship of Hunter Biden’s laptop story reveals how files can be hidden from top executives
Musk first spoke about the release of Twitter’s internal files regarding its role in suppressing free speech in late November. Days after that announcement, Musk made good on that promise by exposing the social media platform’s machinations of censorship.
The first file drop proved that Twitter execs were trying to block the distribution of Hunter Biden’s laptop story. They flagged viral tweets about the story as “unsafe”, restricted their distribution and even blocked direct sharing via Twitter’s direct messaging feature.
Investigative reporter Matt Taibbi, who dug deep into the files released by Twitter, found that these kinds of extreme restrictions were usually reserved for illegal content posted on the site, such as: B. Child pornography.
At the time, Twitter content moderators claimed reports of Hunter Biden’s laptop violated the site’s policy on sharing hacked materials. It was later revealed that the President’s son’s laptop was not hacked but simply left in a Delaware computer repair shop.
Musk has teased a second drop of revelations from Twitter regarding his role in stifling free speech on the platform. Originally slated for a Dec. 4 release, Musk updated his followers by saying it will take a few more days to compile all the relevant data.
The hidden and deleted files, as he has already mentioned, influenced the timing of the release of subsequent episodes. (Related: Elon Musk Promises to Reveal “More Smoking Guns” After Exposing Twitter’s Suppression of Hunter Biden’s Laptop Story.)
Part of the delay was former Twitter Deputy General Counsel and former Federal Bureau of Investigation General Counsel Jim Baker, who thoroughly reviewed what information Musk released in the front row of the files without his knowledge. He was later released for his actions.
