LAPD sergeant accused of injuring motorist in pursuit faces charges

A Los Angeles Police Department sergeant was charged Friday with a misdemeanor count of reckless driving that caused injuries after an accident last spring that occurred during a pursuit, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office said.
In the May 6 incident, Sgt. Ruby Aguirre, a 14-year veteran of the Los Angeles Police Department, is charged with running a red light and hitting a limousine at the intersection of Jefferson Boulevard and Western Avenue.
One person suffered serious injuries and was taken to a hospital.
“Sworn police officers have a responsibility to obey all laws, especially when they are on the job and in uniform,” Dist said. atty said George Gascón in a press release. “Fortunately, no one died in this case, but it will leave an indelible mark on the victim. My office’s Bureau of Victim Services is available to provide any services or resources needed to assist the victim during their recovery.”
The LAPD said in a statement that it was aware of the charges against Aguirre, who received a “non-field” call.
The department said it was “fully cooperating” with prosecutors.
Aguirre is due to be charged on April 17.
