Two years after the company formerly known as Facebook indefinitely suspended then-President Donald Trump’s accounts, it’s bringing him back.
Meta announced its decision Wednesday to restore former President Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts, saying it would happen in “the coming weeks.”
In general, we do not want to hinder open debates on our platforms, especially in the context of democratic elections. People should be able to hear what politicians are saying – good, bad and ugly – in order to make informed decisions at the ballot box. 1/4

The company was expected to consider Trump’s fate sometime this month. Meta’s semi-independent outside policy committee, the Oversight Board, declined to decide the case itself if given the opportunity, but urged the company to set a timeframe for Trump’s suspension to 2021. That two-year suspension period expired this month.
The oversight body at the time criticized Meta for creating new rules for Trump’s indefinite punishment, which it enacted after the former president incited violence during the Jan. 6 riots in the US Capitol.
