Women’s Doctor: A new technology offers an alternative treatment for breast cancer

Women who have had a lumpectomy for breast cancer usually need to return to the hospital for weeks of daily radiotherapy, the woman’s doctor. Technology eliminates this need. The procedure is called intraoperative radiotherapy. It’s a technology called intrabeam, and here’s how it works. Radiation is delivered within the breast during surgery immediately after the lumpectomy. It is a large dose that reduces excessive radiation to adjacent tissues. And joining us this morning, and more, is Dr. Christian Aoki from Al-Rahma Medical Center. You should not be confused with the player from the Kansas City Chiefs of Years ago. You are a power in your right hand. good morning. >> Good morning. how are you? Jennifer: Good. Thank you for joining us this morning. Tell us how this works, because this targeted therapy should be a game manager. >> It is. And for the right select patients, what we do is make sure they make sure they see all the other doctors and when we think it’s appropriate, we take them to the operator room, and like I said, we give the high-dose radiation the operating room. Jennifer: What is the benefit to the patient? You don’t damage the surrounding tissue, is that right? >> Exactly. Since we deliver it inside the patient, we can deliver radiation where it is necessary to eliminate the cancer problem and make the patient get a very good result. Jennifer: I think not all breast cancer patients are candidates for this type of treatment. >> Absolutely correct. The best patients to have these are patients with SMA tumors and patients where radiation can get all the way around the tumor. Jennifer: What is the recovery time for this procedure? >> Thanks, it’s no different than normal lumpectomy surgery. Even after the operation, you recover and usually go home the same day. Jennifer: Do patients have to ask about this thing when they come in for appointments? >> Absolutely. The thing I think is, like I said, IA GAME Changer in this day and age with coverage and everything going, reducing the number of trips to the hospital is very beneficial. Jenniferabs only. Doctor. OKOYE, Thank you for joining this morning. we appreciate that. takes care. Geneva
