Britain’s Prince Andrew was stripped of all of his royal patronage and military affiliations – with the Queen’s approval. This announcement came a day laterAndrew asked to dismiss a lawsuit brought by Virginia Joffrey, alleging that he sexually assaulted her when she was 17 years old.
A Buckingham Palace spokesman said on Thursday: “The Duke of York will continue to perform no public duties and will defend this cause as a private citizen.”
All of his official roles have been handed over to Queen Elizabeth and will be redistributed to other members of the royal family, according to a royal source. Nor would he use “His Royal Highness” in any official position.
Andrew’s lawyers argued thatIt should be discarded because of a that Jeffrey signed with a convicted sex offender . Judge Lewis Kaplan said the 2009 deal “can’t be seen” in Andrew’s favour.
It is likely that Andrew will decide to fight the case in court, but given the negative light this process will turn out to be, most analysts see it highly unlikely. As a UK resident, he can also simply refuse to cooperate with the trial if it goes ahead, but this tactic could prove disastrous.
Ricky Kleiman, a legal analyst with CBS News, said the prince’s best option would be to try to reach a settlement with Geoffrey out of court, to stop the case from trial. But Geoffrey must agree to this option, and has not indicated any inclination to do so.
Joffrey said in a tweet Friday that she was “delighted” with the judge’s ruling as it would give her “a chance to continue uncovering the truth.”
She said in the tweets, which included thanks to her legal team and a message of solidarity with “countless other survivors of sexual abuse and trafficking.”
Joffrey, who claims that the Prince sexually assaulted her on several occasions when she was a teenager,In 2020, he said Andrew “should be panicked” and the royal family “should be held accountable”.
Prince Andrew has denied all the accusations and has never been accused of a crime. He claims he does not remember meeting Giuffre, despite the two being photographed together when Giuffre was a teenager. Epstein’s ex-girlfriend,, who was convicted in December of grooming and trafficking minors for sexual assault, appears in the same photo.
Once considered a handsome, playboy prince, Andrew’s name was indelibly tainted by his friendships with convicted sex offenders Epstein and Maxwell.
