The College Football Playoffs got off to an entertaining start with the College Football Playoffs Semifinals at the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl between the No. 2 Michigan Wolverines and the No. 3 TCU Horned Frogs.
TCU extended a 21:6 lead by half-time, then things got exciting in the third quarter. The Wolverines and Horned Frogs combined for 44 points in the frame. Michigan continued the comeback effort in the fourth, but TCU held on to the 51-45 win.
The Horned Frogs become the first Big 12 team to compete for a CFP title. It’s a second straight season for Michigan to be relegated in the CFP semifinals.
Here’s a look at some of the huge numbers from this exciting competition:
96: This is the total number of points scored in this year’s Fiesta Bowl, the new Fiesta Bowl record. He surpasses the 1996 mark of the Nebraska Cornhuskers and Florida Gators (86 points). It is the third-highest scoring CFP game and third-most combined points in an AP Top 5 match of all time.
51: The Horned Frogs’ 51 points are the most in a bowl game in school history. It is also the fifth 50-point game by a team in CFP history.
Michigan also made history. The 51 points is the second most times the team has given up in a bowl game. It is the third time a Jim Harbaugh-coached Wolverines squad has conceded more than 50 points during his tenure. The other two instances both came against the Ohio State Buckeyes (62 in 2018 and 56 in 2019).
44: TCU and Michigan combined for 44 points in the third quarter. That’s the most points scored in a quarter in CFP history, breaking the previous record of 40 set by the Clemson Tigers and Alabama Crimson Tide in the fourth quarter of the 2016 national championship game.

Over 45: Saturday’s Fiesta Bowl was the second AP top five matchup in the Poll Era (since 1936) in which each team scored over 45 points. The other event was the 2018 Rose Bowl, also a playoff semifinal, between the Georgia Bulldogs and the Oklahoma Sooners.
1: The Horned Frogs end a winning streak for the Big 12 as the conference teams went 4-0 in Saturday’s CFP games.
