BMW is working on a redesign for the X2 compact crossover, and the automaker confirmed on Wednesday that the next-generation lineup will include an electric option of the iX2.
The redesigned X2 will arrive at the end of the year, which means it should be a 2024 model. BMW confirmed that the iX2 will appear alongside the regular model.
Prototypes for the new X2 indicate a more coupe-like shape than the current generation, which has a slightly flatter roofline.
News of the iX2 doesn’t come as much of a surprise as the redesigned X2 is closely related to the redesigned X1 that was launched for 2023 and includes its own iX1 electric option. The vehicles use BMW Group’s FAAR platform, which was developed for compact cars and crossovers and can support gas, plug-in hybrid and electric powertrains.

Expect the iX2 to match the specs of the iX1, which means a 64.7kWh battery and a 308hp twin-motor powertrain. It’s possible that at some point there will also be a single motor setup.
BMW estimates a range of 250 miles for the iX1, and buyers of the iX2 can expect something similar.
BMW has not confirmed that the iX1 or iX2 will be sold in the US
On Wednesday, BMW also confirmed the October arrival of a redesigned 5 Series with an i5 electric option. The company also confirmed that the i5 will spawn an i5 touring electric car next spring.
