The southbound Freeway 5 in Glendale was closed Saturday night after debris fell onto the roadway from an overpass.

An apparent sinkhole that opened near the overpass caused pieces of concrete to fall onto the freeway near Western Avenue, said Sgt. Victor Jackson, a spokesman for the Glendale Police Department.

The debris prompted the California Highway Patrol to issue a Sigalert around 6 p.m. and close all southbound lanes, CHP Officer Elizabeth Kravig said. Traffic will be diverted to Western Avenue, she said.

No cars were hit by the debris and no one was injured, Kravig said.

Kravig said CHP officials and Caltrans workers are still trying to determine the source of the debris, as it’s unclear if it fell from the overpass or came down a hill. She had no estimate of when the southbound freeway lanes would reopen.

No debris was reported in the northbound lanes, Kravig added.
