When Rihanna takes the stage on Sunday’s Super Bowl Halftime Show, she not only embodies a musician who has climbed the charts to global superstardom, but also an even rarer achievement: she is one of the world’s few self-made billionaires.
Rihanna has a net worth of $1.4 billion, making her the wealthiest female musician and the second richest entertainer after Oprah, who is worth $2.5 billion according to Forbes magazine.
While music has made Rihanna famous, it’s her beauty line Fenty that has carried her wealth into the stratosphere. The singer, who debuted her makeup line in 2017, won fans over to the brand’s diverse color palette, which offered foundations in a variety of skin tones.
Fenty Beauty — named after Rihanna’s real name, Robyn Fenty — is a 50/50 venture with French luxury goods group LVMH, which also owns big fashion brands like Louis Vuitton. According to Forbes, the Fenty line grossed more than $550 million in 2020.
Rihanna also owns a 30% stake in lingerie line Savage x Fenty, which raised $115 million at a $1 billion valuation in February 2021, the magazine noted.
Billionaire lists are typically dominated by white males, from self-made billionaires like Amazon founder Jeff Bezos to people who have inherited great wealth like Jim Walton, a son of Walmart founder Sam Walton. Rihanna told The New York Times in 2021 that she hopes her new billionaire status would inspire others like her.

“[I]It feels good to be able to inspire young women and boys from humble backgrounds like me, from immigrant parents or from immigrants themselves,” she told the publication.
Rihanna echoed some of those sentiments to CBS News, noting that she wants her halftime appearance to represent both immigrant — she’s originally from Barbados — and black women.
“I represent immigrants, represent my country, Barbados, represent black women everywhere,” Rihanna said. “That’s really important, that’s the key for people to see the possibilities. And I’m honored to be here, and honored to do so this year.”
