Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes celebrate their second Super Bowl together
The Kansas City Chiefs became NFL champions for the second time in four years after bouncing back to earn an exciting 38-35 win over the Philadelphia Eagles.
The Chiefs trailed for much of Super Bowl 57 in Phoenix, trailing 27-21 heading into the last quarter.
But despite limping from a serious ankle injury, quarterback Patrick Mahomes and veteran coach Andy Reid orchestrated a route back ahead of 67,827.
Mahomes, who was named the MVP of the season for a second time last week, made touchdown passes for Kadarius Toney and Skyy Moore to put Kansas City ahead for the first time.
The Eagles equalized after a third quick touchdown from Jalen Hurts, followed by a two-point conversion by the quarterback in the third year.
But a heroic 26-yard run from Mahomes set the stage for Harrison Butker to kick a game-winning field goal from 27 yards.
Mahomes’ performance made the 27-year-old the first player since 1999 to win season MVP, Super Bowl and Super Bowl MVP in the same season.
He has led the Chiefs to at least the AFC championship game as a starter in all five seasons, and many have argued that they would need to win another Super Bowl for the Reid Mahomes era to be considered a dynasty.
“I’m not going to say dynasty just yet, we’re not done yet,” Mahomes warned.
“I told you nothing would keep me off the field. I want to thank my teammates – we challenged each other and it cost everyone.”
Reid said of Mahomes: “He wants to be the greatest player of all time and that’s how he goes about his business. And he does it humbly, there is no boasting.
“The great quarterbacks make everyone around him better, including the head coach. So he did a damn good job.”
Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce added, “I’ve got Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes, I’ve got a great team, we’ve had an incredible run.
“In the beginning we were atypical [of the game] but everyone had this look in their eyes that they were going to leave everything on the field and we did that.”

A historic and rare Super Bowl
It was both a historic and rare Super Bowl as the NFL’s flagship event came to the Arizona state capital for the fourth time.
It was the first Super Bowl to feature two black quarterbacks and the first to feature brothers on opposing teams, namely Travis Kelce and his older brother Jason, the Eagles center.
And it was rare because it featured the season’s top two teams and top two players – Mahomes and Hurts.
It was the first time the top seed in each conference had reached the Super Bowl since 2018 – when the Eagles defeated the New England Patriots 41-33 to earn their only previous Super Bowl win.
This is the highest-scoring Super Bowl since, but there has likely been some drama as each team showed why they were so dominant during the regular season, and both finished with a 14-3 record.
Now, Super Bowl 57 will be remembered as much more than the “Kelce Bowl,” which saw the two teams produce an epic in the Arizona state capital.

It promised to be a shootout from the first quarter, as no defense failed to stop their opponents from doing what they had been doing all season.
Hurts already had the single-season record for quick touchdowns by a quarterback and three more on Sunday extended it to 18.
The first capped the game’s opening move, and the Chiefs responded with Mahomes, who found Travis Kelce in the corner for the tight end’s career-best 16th touchdown of the season.
However, there were ominous signs for Kansas City in the second quarter, although Hurts’ 45-yard touchdown pass to AJ Brown was canceled when Nick Bolton fumbled for a defensive touchdown.
The Eagles starved possession bosses, Mahomes began to limp badly, Hurts batted on his second touchdown and Jake Elliott kicked a field goal to make it 24-14 at halftime.
Whatever coach Reid, 64, said to his players during Rihanna’s halftime show seemed to do the trick as Kansas City came out and put together a 10-play drive topped by an Isiah Pacheco score.
And they thought they took the lead moments later with another defensive touchdown from Bolton, only for the game to be reversed and Jake Elliott made it 27-21 with a field goal.
But two touchdowns in quick succession, both from well-crafted passing plays from the Reid playbook that threw up the Philly defense, tipped the game in Kansas City’s favor.
Hurts kept the Eagles at bay, but Mahomes’ rise up the middle allowed the Chiefs to manage the clock before scoring the deciding goal with eight seconds left.
