T-Mobile users in the US reported major network outages Monday night, leaving them unable to make calls, send texts or access the internet, according to an outage tracking website.
The carrier is working to restore service, which is operating at near-normal levels in affected areas, including major cities like Chicago, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Phoenix, New York and Seattle.
T-Mobile didn’t disclose how many users were affected, but data from DownDetector, an outage tracker that relies on user-submitted data to generate service reports, shows customers were at the peak of the outbreak at 10 a.m. Monday Outage more than 83,000 complaints have been filed p.m. Eastern time. That number dropped to about 9,000 by midnight.
Comments posted on DownDetector were from users who indicated they were located in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Hawaii, Kansas, Nebraska, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Texas and Washington.
Users tweeted about the service disruptions, saying their phones appeared to be in “SOS mode” during the outages, meaning they couldn’t connect directly to the network but were able to make emergency calls.
T-Mobile didn’t immediately pinpoint the cause or extent of the outage, but company executives tweeted that the carrier was working to fix the disruptions.
“Our teams are rapidly addressing a third-party fiber optic disruption issue that has been intermittently impacting some voice, messaging and data services in multiple areas,” said T-Mobile President of Technology Neville Ray tweeted.
Major wireless carriers like Verizon Wireless and T-Mobile also experienced minor service disruptions Monday night. Verizon received more than 2,000 reports of unresolved incidents, and AT&T had more than 1,200 at the peak of outages.
Representatives from T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon were not immediately available for comment.
