Swifties vs Ticketmaster

Ticketmaster has once again drawn the ire of concert-goers after fans of popular 80’s British band The Cure took to social media to complain about having to pay handling fees in excess of the face value of the tickets.

The Cure have offered tickets to their upcoming North American tour for just $20 after promising to make the shows affordable for fans. The group also wrote on its website that it is working with its ticketing partners to thwart bootleggers and avoid inflated resale prices.

Despite those efforts, some tickets cost more than double their base price on Wednesday after fans added up the cost of Ticketmaster’s setup fees, service and order processing fees.

Cure frontman Robert Smith tweeted that he was “disgusted” by the “debacle” of the Ticketmaster fee and had no control over the site’s fees. “I asked how [the fees] are justified,” he wrote. “If I get a coherent answer, I’ll let you all know.”

LIKE ALL OF YOU, I AM SICK OF TODAY’S TICKETMASTER “FEES” DEBACLE. To put it bluntly: THE ARTIST HAS NO WAY TO LIMIT THEM. I asked how they are justified. IF I GET SOMETHING COHERENT THROUGH AN ANSWER I WILL LET YOU ALL KNOW. X

TicketMaster did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Ticketmaster has long been criticized for its sales practices. In December, the service faced widespread backlash and a lawsuit when it canceled a public sale of Taylor Swift tour tickets after skyrocketing demand crashed its website. And in February, concert-goers complained of technical difficulties using Ticketmaster and long lines after trying to snag Beyonce tour tickets.

The spate of complaints about the Swift ticket debacle also drew the attention of lawmakers. The Senate Judiciary Committee’s Antitrust Panel held a hearing earlier this year on whether Live Nation Entertainment – the company that owns Ticketmaster – and several other ticketing companies broke laws to preserve the competition and should be disbanded.

The Justice Department is also investigating whether Live Nation abused its power over the multi-billion dollar concert industry.
