The US Army Corp of Engineers’ cat calendar is so bad it’s absolutely brilliant

You have probably already chosen your calendar for 2023. It could contain still landscape photos or famous books. I have something better: the 2023 cat calendar from the US Army Corps of Engineers, Portland District.

Download and print right away.

The calendar has the usual expected features, with a monthly photo and dates at the bottom. Each image features a giant cat lolling on or attacking equipment or a vital piece of infrastructure. January begins with a tabby using the dam at Hills Creek Reservoir in Oregon as a scratching post. Juli plays a cat sitting on the deck of a Corps of Engineers ship. Comments on dams, giant cats and cat behavior accompany the images.

The Corps of Engineers quietly released the calendar late last year, but it’s recently garnered more public attention. The Portland County tweeted about it last week, with a tongue-in-cheek response to criticism of the “poorly photoshopped” calendar. “At least now we finally have a New Year’s resolution. We’ll be signing up for a Photoshop class,” the group wrote.

Us: *makes a cat calendar for people to enjoy*

People: “You guys suck at Photoshop.”

At least now we finally have a New Year’s resolution. I’m going to sign up for a Photoshop class.

I would argue that much of the calendar’s charm would be lost if it were a refined production. The lopsided proportions, funky edges, silly font, goofy writing, and random typesetting mark it as a labor of love and joy. Please, Corps of Engineers person who made this, do not take this Photoshop class. Live your own giant cat truth and do it again for 2024.
