Twitter is officially bringing back Twitter Blue subscription Monday, starting in five countries before quickly expanding to others. after Esther Crawford, Head of Product Management at Twitter. Web signups are $8 per month and iOS signups are $11 per month for “access to subscriber-only features, including the blue tick,” per a tweet from the company account.
Android users can shop online and use their subscription on their phones, Crawford said. The higher cost of iOS signups could be a move by Twitter to offset the cost of Apple’s 30% commission on in-app subscriptions, or simply to discourage users from signing up through the Apple Store in the first place after a Twitter Elon Musk was triggered by anger over allegations that Apple was cutting advertising on the platform.
Twitter had previously attempted to democratize the prestige of the blue tick — once used to verify trustworthy and notable accounts — by making it available to anyone willing to spend $8 a month, damn it. The result was a lot of users buying a tick to impersonate other accounts and wreak havoc in general. Crawford tweeted Over the weekend, Twitter added a verification step before adding a blue tick to an account to combat identity theft, which they say is against Twitter Rules.
With the relaunch of Twitter’s subscription offering, the social media platform will continue to color-code timelines, introducing gold ticks for corporations and soon gray ticks for governments and “multilateral accounts,” whatever that might be.
“Companies that previously had relationships with Twitter will receive gold checks on Monday,” tweeted Crawford. “We will soon be opening this up to more companies via a new process.”
Because Twitter is still testing this feature extensively, the company warned that subscribers who change their handle, display name, or profile photo will temporarily lose the blue tick until their account is verified again.
Subscribers can edit their tweets, upload 1080p videos, and access read mode next to their blue tick company said. Plus, their tweets are “shot” to the top of replies, mentions, and searches, and they’re spammed with 50% less ads.
