V-12-powered GMA T.50 supercar goes into production

Gordon Murray Automotive’s first product, the T.50 supercar, is now in production, some two and a half years after it was first shown.

Production takes place at the GMA factory in Dunsfold, UK, near Dunsfold Aerodrome, the location of the Top Gear test track.

Only 100 examples will be built, along with 25 examples of the track-focused T.50s Niki Lauda, and all build lots for both cars are gone. GMA has already unveiled a successor in the form of the T.33 supercar, and all 100 slots for that car are gone too.

To mark the start of production of the T.50, Gordon Murray, the car’s designer and founder of parent company GMA-Gordon Murray Group, signed the carbon fiber monocoque chassis used for the initial build. Also present was Phillip Lee, CEO of the Gordon Murray Group.

“Designing and engineering the T.50 has been an incredible journey with much of the initial work being completed during lockdown. So to witness the engineering of the customer’s car’s first ready-to-assemble carbon fiber monocoque, less than two and a half. half a year after the reveal is pretty magical,” Murray said in a statement.

This monocoque was key to bringing the T.50’s curb weight down to a claimed 2,174 pounds, or about two-thirds the weight of competing supercars. That’s impressive, as the T.50 seats three (with the driver in the middle) and still has some room for some luggage, although the car’s footprint is also similar to that of a Porsche 718.

Power in the car comes from a Cosworth-engineered 3.9-liter V-12 that revs at 12,100 rpm, which GMA says is the top-revving of any production car. When paired with a 48-volt mild hybrid system, peak power is 654 hp and 344 lb-ft of torque. Those numbers aren’t world-best for a supercar these days, but GMA’s mission was to deliver the ultimate driving experience, as opposed to headline numbers.

To support its customers, GMA will establish service centers and smaller service support centers around the world. Five of the service centers are already established; They are located in the UK, Japan, Abu Dhabi and the US (one each on the east and west coasts). The service centers are planned for Australia, Bahrain, China, Germany, Singapore, Spain and Saudi Arabia as well as six US states.
