As the sun stretches its time over the horizon, thousands of beach lovers travel from far and wide to take their vacation and enjoy the busy energy of the summer season along the pristine South Delaware coast. As the summer crowds return home and the sun sets earlier each evening, showing its deeper fall colors, locals and long-time visitors begin to whisper about the “second season” like a hidden treasure. What some call the “low season”, others call the best time of the year – beauty without the hustle and bustle.

Good news travels fast and with each new year, the second season welcomes everyone back to the beach, even after packing away their swimsuits and board shorts.

There’s a feeling of… festivals in the air. The New Year on the Delaware South Shore begins with the 2023 Fire and Ice Festival: Lights, Camera, Action!, January 27-29, 2023. Experience the beach like never before with some movie magic at this Hollywood-themed event. Spend the weekend marveling at 63,000 pounds of ice transformed into masterfully crafted sculptures. Enjoy other winter festivals including bonfires, live music, outdoor movies and more. Visitors and locals alike rave about the local tasting tour, drink competitions, and warm up with the comfort of an old-fashioned chili cookoff. Local businesses and towns come together to extend the joy of the holiday season with something for everyone. The whole thing ends with a fireworks show to rival the 4th of July.

Before you know it, the morning light begins to peek in earlier each day and linger later to see what it’s been missing. Spring offers a show for those who love wildlife; and fishermen and gourmets eagerly await the first catches of the season. For those ready to get outside after a leisurely stay during the winter months, the award-winning 34th Annual Ocean to Bay Bike Tour is our early start to the season. During the last weekend of April, riders of all skill levels can take part in any of the bike tours, which cover over 180 miles of beautiful Sussex County beaches, bays and beyond.

Come back and keep exploring; endless possibilities abound. Stay for Locals Summer, which kicks off the week after Labor Day with our 45th Annual Bethany Beach Boardwalk Arts Festival featuring 100 judged artists. Wind your way through black pine trees along sandy trails. Kayak along the banks of canals, bays and shores, or spend the day fishing, surfing or finally a round of golf. For some shopping therapy, shop tax-free at many unique boutiques, galleries and local specialty shops. There’s something sweet about breathing in the salty sea air while doing the things you love. And whether you prefer salty, sweet or savory, there are hundreds of restaurants to choose from. The Culinary Coast TM is brimming with a variety of spectacular restaurants; featuring award-winning chefs, farm-to-table dining and delicious seafood. The length of the days can change from summer to winter, but the truth is that time doesn’t fly when you realize that the places you love to visit in the summer season are full of hidden gems all year round, with the beach as a background.
