It’s hard to believe, but it’s now 22 years since the original The Fast and the Furious hit theaters, but the franchise isn’t over yet.
There are at least two more movies coming, Numbers 10 and 11 for those who count, and the first trailer for the 10th part, Fast X, was released on Friday. The film’s release date is currently slated for May 19, 2023.
Filming began in early 2022, but original director Justin Lin, who worked on films three through six in the franchise and then took a hiatus before returning to film number nine, quit after a month despite writing much of the script had. Louis Leterrier, responsible for movies like 2005’s Transporter 2 and 2010’s Clash of the Titans, took over as director.
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson also decided to leave the franchise after the ninth film, despite some attempts by franchise star Vin Diesel to get him back. He will be replaced by new actors Jason Momoa, who plays new villain Dante, and Brie Larson, who plays an ally of Diesel’s character Dominic Toretto. Other actors returning for another round alongside Diesel include previously confirmed Charlize Theron, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Sung Kang, Nathalie Emmanuel and Ludacris, as well as now John Cena and Jason Statham.
The trailer shows Dante coming after Toretto and his family in an act of revenge. It turns out he’s the son of Brazilian drug lord Hernan Reyes, who was killed in the fifth film. Dante is expected to work with Theron’s character Cipher, while Cena’s character Jakob and Statham’s character Deckard Shaw both return to help Toretto.
Of course, there will be plenty of cars too, including the return of Toretto’s vehicle of choice: the Dodge Charger.
There isn’t much more plot detail, although the film and the planned 11th installment are expected to share an overarching storyline that will wrap up the franchise’s main plot. Diesel said in an interview in 2021 that the 11th film – tentatively set for release in 2024 – would be the end of the main story. However, that leaves room for spin-offs like 2019’s Hobbs and Shaw.
