Water shaped South Carolina’s Hammock Coast – be it rivers and swamps or Winyah Bay and the Atlantic. It is historically and culturally important, making Georgetown County one of America’s premier vacation spots today.

Surfers ride the waves. Kayakers explore tidal creeks. Fishermen and boaters tell stories along the rivers. And countless others soak up the sun on the pristine beaches of Pawleys Island, Litchfield, Murrells Inlet, Southern Garden City and DeBordieu Colony near historic Georgetown. South Carolina’s Hammock Coast is perfectly located south of Myrtle Beach and north of Charleston, and its pristine and uncrowded shores draw visitors year-round.

The beaches of the Hammock Coast are perfect for getting away from it all. In fact, numerous national magazines have noted that some of South Carolina’s best beaches are found on the Hammock Coast.

These beach communities each have their own vibe and charm.

Murrell’s Inlet, for example, is home to Brookgreen Gardens, a 9,127-acre world-famous sculpture and botanical showcase, and Huntington Beach State Park, a USA Today/10 Best nominee, where visitors can relax at more than 180 campsites and offer some of the best birding opportunities at the Eastcoast. You can even explore the historic Atalaya Castle in the 2,000-acre state park. Seriously, the Hammock Coast has an actual castle on the beach!

Murrells Inlet is also known as the “Seafood Capital of South Carolina”. Originally a fishing village on a sheltered bay, the community boasts some of the best seafood in the south! The Murrells Inlet Marsh Walk, a half-mile boardwalk, allows visitors to experience the salt marsh ecosystem while enticing restaurants, shops, parasailing, jet skiing and fishing excursions.

Pawleys Island is America’s oldest beach resort and is still a great place to enjoy a quiet, relaxing vacation. As the birthplace of Pawleys Island’s handmade rope hammock, relaxation has a long history here. The historic island has no neon and no commercial development (no, not even a single store or gas station); However, there are two historic inns and countless rental apartments. And just beyond the short causeway are world-class restaurants and boutiques.

Families have loved Litchfield Beach for generations. No wonder Tripadvisor named it one of the top 10 beaches in America.

Award winning golf can also be enjoyed on the Hammock Coast with 13 golf courses within a 15 minute drive. Many are built on former rice plantations and offer a gracious southern golfing experience. Three of Golf Magazine’s “Top 100 You Can Play” are here.

For history buffs, Georgetown is South Carolina’s third oldest city, having been founded in 1729, and the beaches of DeBordieu Colony are just across the bridge. Five museums, including the South Carolina Maritime Museum, are all located in the historic waterfront district. Self-guided walking tours offer insight into the city’s 66 National Historic Register buildings. Historical American figures like George Washington and Harriett Tubman are intertwined in our rich history.

Andrews, 18 miles inland from Georgetown, offers the perfect place to experience the great outdoors. From athletic clay courts to kayaking along the meandering Black River, Andrews is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream.

Across the Hammock Coast, visitors will discover enticing culinary delights. When the hardest part of vacationing is deciding where to eat, know you’ve come to the right place! From fine dining to southern fare, a myriad of eclectic locally owned restaurants will whet your appetite.

Rediscover life without schedules on South Carolina’s Hammock Coast. The only itinerary you may need is a tide chart.
