Americans looking to get their Christmas shopping going on Thursday have fewer options than they did before the pandemic as more retailers now close their doors on Thanksgiving.
The practice by major retail chains of launching Black Friday sales in stores on Thanksgiving ended abruptly in 2020, when COVID-19 made visiting crowded malls particularly unappealing.
While it was given to employees as a day off gift, the idea seemed to go down well with the public. Target, for example, announced in 2021 that it would never be open for in-store purchases again on Thanksgiving.
In a pinch, shoppers who need last-minute ingredients or basic necessities will find some retailers open on Thursdays, though many with reduced hours. Here’s which retailers are closed and open on Thanksgiving.
